Sodium-dependent bicarbonate transporter A (SbtA) is a high-affinity, sodium-dependent membrane transporter found in cyanobacteria, primarily involved in the uptake of bicarbonate (HCO₃⁻) as part of the CO₂-concentrating mechanism (CCM)[1][4]. SbtA enables cyanobacteria to adapt to environments with low inorganic carbon by actively transporting bicarbonate into the cell in exchange for sodium ions. Its activity is crucial for optimizing the efficiency of photosynthetic carbon fixation under such conditions[1][4]. SbtA forms a complex with a regulatory protein, SbtB, which allosterically modulates SbtA function through interactions that are responsive to cellular adenylate nucleotide ratios (ATP, ADP, AMP)[1][3][5]. SbtA and its homologs have been studied for potential applications in enhancing photosynthetic productivity in crop plants by engineering their bicarbonate uptake systems[1][4]. There are no established interacting drugs, disease associations, or human biomarkers for SbtA, as it is not a human protein; its importance is specific to microbial carbon concentration and proposed synthetic biology applications.
