Overview

The sodium-dependent dopamine transporter (DAT/SLC6A3) is an essential regulator of dopaminergic neurotransmission through high-affinity uptake mechanisms tightly coupled with sodium gradients at neuronal membranes. It plays critical roles not only under normal physiological conditions but also as a key target for multiple neuropsychiatric medications—and its dysfunction contributes directly to several major brain diseases including ADHD, Parkinson’s disease, bipolar disorder, substance abuse syndromes among others.
