Sodium-dependent phosphate transporter PiT-2 (PiT-2)

Target
PiT-2
Molecular classification
Solute Carrier Family 20 (SLC20), Type III sodium-phosphate co-transporter, Transporter
01

Overview

Sodium-dependent phosphate transporter PiT-2 is a membrane protein responsible for the sodium-coupled transport of inorganic phosphate (Pi) into cells. It is encoded by the SLC20A2 gene and belongs to the solute carrier 20 (SLC20) family. PiT-2 plays a crucial role in intracellular transport of inorganic phosphate, phosphate homeostasis, and may act as a sensor mediating intracellular signaling dependent on extracellular phosphate levels. Alterations in SLC20A2/PiT-2 are associated with familial idiopathic basal ganglia calcification, chronic kidney disease & vascular calcification, and diabetic nephropathy.
