Sodium-dependent phosphate transporter type IIb (NaPi-IIb)

Target
NaPi-IIb
Molecular classification
Transporter, SLC34 family, Type II Sodium-dependent Phosphate Transporter
01

Overview

Sodium-dependent phosphate transporter type IIb (NaPi-IIb/SLC34A2) is a critical epithelial membrane protein responsible for electrogenic cotransport of sodium ions with inorganic phosphate—primarily facilitating dietary phosphorus uptake from the intestine but also functioning in other organs such as lung. Its activity directly impacts whole-body phosphorus balance. Mutations can cause rare diseases like pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis; overexpression on certain tumors makes it an attractive target for antibody-drug conjugate therapies under development for cancers such as ovarian carcinoma. Downregulation or dysfunction may contribute to disordered mineral metabolism seen in chronic kidney disease patients.
