Overview

Sodium-dependent phosphate transporter type IIb (NaPi-IIb, SLC34A2) and sodium-dependent phosphate transporters 1 and 2 (PiT-1/SLC20A1, PiT-2/SLC20A2) are membrane proteins responsible for the majority of active phosphate transport in the intestine (NaPi-IIb) and for cellular phosphate uptake in multiple tissues (PiT-1 and PiT-2). They play essential roles in phosphate absorption, systemic phosphate balance, and are implicated in several hereditary and acquired metabolic and bone diseases[1][2][4]. NaPi-IIb is primarily found in the small intestine and lungs, whereas PiT-1 and PiT-2 have broad tissue distribution, serving both housekeeping and specialized regulatory functions in phosphate metabolism.
