The sodium-dependent phosphate transporter type III beta chain, commonly abbreviated as PiT-2, is a membrane protein responsible for the cellular uptake of inorganic phosphate (Pi) in a sodium-dependent manner. It is encoded by the SLC20A2 gene in humans. PiT-2 belongs to the Type III family of sodium-phosphate cotransporters, which also includes PiT-1 (SLC20A1). Mutations in SLC20A2 encoding PiT-2 are linked to idiopathic basal ganglia calcification (IBGC), also known as Fahr's disease—a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by abnormal calcium deposits in brain regions such as the basal ganglia. The extracellular domains of PiT proteins serve as receptors for certain retroviruses; specifically, human PiT‑2 serves this function for amphotropic murine retrovirus.
