Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) is a membrane protein primarily responsible for the reabsorption of glucose and sodium from the glomerular filtrate in the kidneys. It is the target of SGLT2 inhibitors, a class of drugs used to manage type 2 diabetes mellitus by reducing blood sugar levels independently of insulin action.
Inhibition of SGLT2 reduces glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, leading to increased urinary glucose excretion and lowered blood sugar levels.
