Sodium Glucose Cotransporter 1 (SGLT1)

Target
SGLT1
Molecular classification
Transporter, Membrane protein
01

Overview

Sodium/glucose cotransporter 1 (SGLT1) is a membrane protein responsible for the active transport of glucose and galactose into cells, primarily in the small intestine and kidney. It is encoded by the SLC5A1 gene and functions as an electrogenic symporter, coupling the transport of two sodium ions for each glucose molecule. SGLT1 plays a crucial role in dietary glucose absorption and renal glucose reabsorption, and mutations in SLC5A1 can cause congenital glucose-galactose malabsorption syndrome. It is indirectly targeted by drugs used in diabetes management and plays a key role in oral rehydration therapy.

Mechanism of action

Indirectly targeted by SGLT2 inhibitors, leading to increased SGLT1 activity in the intestine and kidney to compensate for reduced SGLT2 activity.
