Sodium-glucose cotransporter protein 2 (SGLT2)

Target
SGLT2
Molecular classification
Transporter, Sodium/glucose cotransporter, Solute carrier family 5
01

Overview

The sodium-glucose cotransporter protein 2 (SGLT2) is a membrane protein primarily responsible for the reabsorption of glucose in the kidney. It is an electrogenic symporter that actively transports D-glucose across cell membranes by coupling its movement with sodium ions. Inhibitors of SGLT2 are used as antidiabetic agents, and emerging evidence suggests potential roles for these inhibitors in cancer therapy.

Mechanism of action

Inhibition of renal glucose reabsorption by blocking SGLT2 in proximal tubules, leading to increased urinary glucose excretion and reduced blood sugar levels.
