Sodium-glucose transporter 2 (SGLT2)

Target
SGLT2
Molecular classification
Membrane protein, Transporter, Sodium-dependent glucose cotransporter, Solute carrier
01

Overview

SGLT2 is a sodium-dependent glucose transport protein primarily responsible for the reabsorption of filtered glucose in the kidney. It is located in the early proximal tubule of the nephron and reabsorbs about 80–90% of filtered glucose from urine back into blood. Inhibition of SGLT2 leads to increased urinary excretion of glucose, lowering blood sugar levels, and is used for treating type 2 diabetes mellitus. Clinical trials have also demonstrated cardiovascular and renal protective effects independent of glycemic control.
