Overview
The sodium-hydrogen exchanger (NHE) is a family of membrane proteins that mediate the exchange of intracellular hydrogen ions (H⁺) for extracellular sodium ions (Na⁺) across biological membranes. This process is essential for maintaining cellular pH, cell volume, and overall ion homeostasis. NHE isoforms (NHE1-NHE9) exhibit tissue-specific expression and regulation. Dysregulation of NHE activity is implicated in diseases such as heart failure, kidney failure, and hypertension.
