Overview

Sodium intake refers to the consumption of sodium through dietary sources, most commonly as sodium chloride (table salt). Sodium is an essential electrolyte, required for maintenance of extracellular fluid volume, nerve impulse transmission, and muscle function. The human body regulates sodium closely, primarily via renal mechanisms influenced by hormones like aldosterone and vasopressin. Typical excess sodium intake is prevalent worldwide due to processed foods and added salt, contributing to hypertension, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, obesity, and increased risk of autoimmune and metabolic disorders. Conversely, insufficient sodium intake is rare except in pathological states. Sodium intake is a modifiable risk factor, but not a molecular or therapeutic target.
