Overview

Sodium intake reduction refers to strategies or interventions aimed at lowering dietary sodium consumption in individuals or populations. Sodium is an essential nutrient but excessive intake is associated with increased risk of hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, and potentially kidney diseases or stroke[6][7]. Most sodium in the diet comes from processed foods. Reducing sodium intake can lower blood pressure, especially in salt-sensitive individuals, but is not a molecular or protein target for drugs. Some controversies exist over the risks of too-low sodium intake and population-wide recommendations[4][5].
