Target intelligence / Profile preview

Sodium Iodide Symporter (NIS)

Target
NIS
Molecular classification
Sodium/solute symporter family (SSF), Solute carrier family 5 (SLC5)
01

Overview

The sodium iodide symporter (NIS) is an intrinsic plasma membrane glycoprotein that actively mediates the transport of iodide ions into cells. It plays a critical role in concentrating iodine for thyroid hormone synthesis and has been widely adopted as an imaging reporter gene for non-invasive tracking of gene expression and cell trafficking. NIS also enables targeted radioiodine therapy by concentrating therapeutic doses of beta-emitting isotopes in target tissues.

Other names
SLC5A5Sodium/iodide cotransporter
02

Mechanism of action

Co-transports two sodium ions (Na+) along with one iodide ion (I-) into the cytoplasm, driven by the electrochemical sodium gradient maintained by the Na+/K+-ATPase pump.
