Sodium Ion Concentration (Na⁺)

Target
Na⁺
Molecular classification
Ion, Electrolyte
01

Overview

Sodium ion concentration refers to the amount of sodium ions (Na⁺) present in a given volume of solution. In biological systems, sodium is the major cation in extracellular fluid and plays a critical role in maintaining osmotic pressure, fluid balance, nerve impulse transmission, muscle contraction, and cellular homeostasis. Abnormal sodium concentrations (hyponatremia and hypernatremia) can lead to significant clinical conditions affecting neurological function.

02

Mechanism of action

Drugs affect sodium levels primarily by influencing renal sodium handling or water balance. Diuretics increase sodium excretion. Vasopressin antagonists promote water excretion without sodium loss. Intravenous fluids directly alter the sodium concentration in the extracellular fluid.
