Sodium lactate

Molecular classification
Other (chemical salt; not a protein, enzyme, receptor, transporter, or gene product)
01

Overview

Sodium lactate is the sodium salt of lactic acid (chemical formula C3H5NaO3), produced by the alkaline neutralization of lactic acid derived from fermentation. It is highly water-soluble, with a mild saline taste, and acts as a humectant, pH regulator, buffering agent, and preservative. While it is used as a pharmaceutical excipient, food preservative (E325), and in cosmetics for moisturizing and pH regulation, it is not a molecular target for therapeutic drugs such as a receptor, enzyme, or transporter. Sodium lactate should not be treated as a canonical drug target for molecular pharmacology or drug discovery purposes; it is a small molecule ingredient and excipient, not a protein, gene, or cellular pathway element.
