Sodium-Potassium Adenosine Triphosphatase (Na+/K+ ATPase)

Target
Na+/K+ ATPase
Molecular classification
P-type ATPase, Enzyme, Transporter
01

Overview

The Sodium-Potassium ATPase (Na+/K+ ATPase) is a transmembrane protein responsible for maintaining electrochemical gradients by actively transporting three sodium ions out of the cell and two potassium ions into the cell for each ATP molecule hydrolyzed. It is crucial for maintaining resting membrane potential, regulating cell volume, and enabling secondary active transport processes. It is a therapeutic target for cardiac glycosides used in treating congestive heart failure and arrhythmias.
