The sodium-potassium-chloride symporter (NKCC) is a membrane transport protein that facilitates the coupled movement of sodium (Na⁺), potassium (K⁺), and chloride (Cl⁻) ions across cellular membranes. It plays a critical role in ion homeostasis, cell volume regulation, and neuronal excitability. There are two main isoforms: NKCC1 (ubiquitous) and NKCC2 (kidney-specific).
