Sodium reabsorption in the ascending limb of the loop of Henle is a crucial renal process for maintaining electrolyte balance, blood pressure, and urine concentration. The thick ascending limb (TAL) is responsible for the majority of sodium reabsorption, driven by the NKCC2 transporter, the Na+/K+ ATPase pump, and paracellular transport. This process also contributes to the generation and maintenance of the medullary osmotic gradient, essential for urine concentration.
