Sodium-sulfate cotransporter 1 (NaS1, also known as NaSi-1 or SLC13A1) is a membrane-bound transporter predominantly expressed on the apical membrane of renal proximal tubule cells, where it mediates the sodium-dependent uptake of sulfate ions from the filtrate into renal epithelial cells, playing a fundamental role in the maintenance of systemic sulfate balance. Disruption of NaS1 activity leads to altered renal sulfate reabsorption and can disturb sulfate homeostasis in mammals. Although NaS1/SLC13A1 is not a prominent therapeutic target in current pharmacology, it is essential for normal renal and metabolic function[4].
Not typically a drug target; theoretical mechanism would be competitive or non-competitive inhibition of sulfate transport.
