Sodium taurocholate co-transporter polypeptide (NTCP) is a sodium-dependent transmembrane transporter protein primarily expressed in the basolateral membrane of hepatocytes in the liver. It plays a central role in the hepatic uptake of conjugated bile acids from plasma, which is essential for maintaining enterohepatic circulation and overall bile acid homeostasis. NTCP is also an essential cell surface receptor for hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis D virus (HDV), enabling viral entry into human hepatocytes. Inhibitors targeting NTCP are being explored to prevent HBV/HDV infection by blocking viral access to hepatocytes.
