Target intelligence / Profile preview
Soft tissue cells refer to a broad histological classification of cells that constitute the supportive, connective, and surrounding structures of the body's organs. This category includes diverse cell types such as myocytes, adipocytes, fibroblasts, endothelial cells, and cells of the peripheral nervous system (National Cancer Institute, 2023). These cells are essential for maintaining physiological homeostasis, providing mechanical strength, and facilitating movement through contractility. In a clinical context, soft tissue cells are the origin of various malignancies known as soft tissue sarcomas, which are often treated with therapies targeting specific intracellular pathways (StatPearls, 2023). For example, gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GIST) are treated with inhibitors targeting the KIT or PDGFRA receptors expressed on these cells. However, because 'Soft Tissue Cells' is a collective term for multiple cell lineages rather than a discrete protein or nucleic acid, it does not function as a canonical therapeutic target in drug discovery. Instead, it serves as the biological environment or tissue of origin for specific molecular targets. Consequently, the term is considered too broad and non-specific for use as a defined molecular target in pharmacological databases.
Not applicable. Soft tissue cells represent a broad histological category of various cell types rather than a specific molecular target such as a receptor or enzyme.
