Overview

A soft tissue scaffold is an engineered three-dimensional structure, often made from natural or synthetic biomaterials, designed to serve as a supportive matrix for cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. These scaffolds aim to replicate the architecture and mechanical properties of native soft tissue extracellular matrix, providing the necessary physical support and biochemical cues for tissue formation and remodeling. Key design requirements include biocompatibility, sufficient porosity to allow cell and nutrient infiltration, appropriate mechanical strength, and, often, degradability matched to tissue regeneration[1][2][4][5]. Soft tissue scaffolds are used to support the repair or regeneration of tissues such as skin, adipose (fat), muscle, or connective tissues and can be applied in reconstructive surgery or wound healing.
