Overview

Solidago canadensis pollen allergens, primarily the pectate lyase Sol c 1, are proteins derived from the pollen of the Canada goldenrod plant (WHO/IUIS Allergen Nomenclature). These allergens are significant triggers for Type I hypersensitivity reactions, particularly during the late summer and autumn seasons in temperate regions (PubMed, PMID: 15585361). When inhaled by sensitized individuals, these proteins cross-link IgE antibodies on the surface of mast cells and basophils, leading to the release of inflammatory mediators like histamine (StatPearls, Allergic Rhinitis). This process results in clinical symptoms such as allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and exacerbation of asthma. While often overshadowed by ragweed, Solidago allergens contribute to the seasonal allergy burden and exhibit cross-reactivity with other members of the Asteraceae family (Allergy, 2004). Therapeutic interventions include symptomatic relief with antihistamines and corticosteroids, as well as disease-modifying allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) aimed at inducing long-term immune tolerance (Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology). AIT functions by promoting the production of regulatory T cells and blocking IgG4 antibodies to neutralize the allergen before it can trigger an IgE-mediated response.

Mechanism of action

Allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) involves the administration of increasing doses of the allergen to induce immunological tolerance, shifting the immune response from a Th2-mediated IgE response to a Th1 and regulatory T-cell (Treg) response, which increases the production of blocking IgG4 antibodies (JACI, 2017).
