Solidifying essence

Solidifying essence (Gù Jīng) is a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) therapeutic concept rather than a specific molecular target or receptor. It refers to the physiological action of preventing the involuntary leakage of 'essence' (Jīng), which primarily includes seminal fluid and urine, typically due to kidney deficiency [2, 14]. This effect is traditionally achieved through the use of astringent herbs like Fupenzi (Rubus chingii) and Yizhi (Alpinia oxyphylla), which are used to treat conditions such as spermatorrhea, nocturnal emission, and enuresis [3, 11, 17]. While it is not a canonical target in Western pharmacology, modern research has mapped the 'solidifying essence' action to various biological pathways, including the activation of β3-adrenoceptors to manage overactive bladder and the regulation of neurotransmitter balance [14, 18]. Furthermore, active components associated with this function have been shown to regulate the PI3K-Akt and AMPK signaling pathways, contributing to urogenital and metabolic stability [5, 16]. Thus, in a biotech context, 'solidifying essence' represents a multi-target therapeutic strategy for enhancing the functional integrity of the reproductive and urinary systems.
