Solitary Chemosensory Cell (SCC)

Target
SCC
Molecular classification
Neuron, Chemosensory receptor cell
01

Overview

Solitary chemosensory cells (SCCs) are specialized neurons located in the nasal epithelium that detect inhaled chemical stimuli, including irritants, toxins, and bacterial quorum-sensing molecules. Activation of SCCs triggers protective reflexes such as sneezing and apnea via trigeminal nerve pathways, and also induces local neurogenic inflammation. They serve as sentinels for environmental threats and contribute to airway defense mechanisms.
