Overview
Soluble adenylyl cyclase (sAC) is a cytosolic enzyme that produces cAMP in response to intracellular bicarbonate, calcium, and ATP levels. It is distinct from transmembrane adenylyl cyclases (tmACs) and plays a key role in sperm function, energy metabolism, and pH homeostasis. sAC is considered the most ancient member among mammalian adenylyl cyclases and acts as a central metabolic/pH sensor. Inhibition or genetic disruption leads to infertility due to impaired sperm motility/functionality.
