Overview

Soluble fibrin is a blood plasma protein arising from the enzymatic cleavage of fibrinogen by thrombin; it is composed of monomeric or small oligomeric fibrin units lacking fibrinopeptides, which can later self-assemble to form insoluble, cross-linked fibrin clots under physiological or pathological conditions. Soluble fibrin exists transiently in the bloodstream and serves as a marker of ongoing coagulation activation and clot formation. Its measurement has applications in clinical diagnosis of thrombotic disorders, and its presence is associated with both normal hemostasis and pathological thrombosis. Soluble fibrin is not a classical drug target but is indirectly affected by drugs that act on the coagulation cascade, such as anticoagulants. Elevated levels are concerning in cardiovascular and inflammatory disease states, and it is used as a biomarker rather than a direct therapeutic target.

Biomarkers

Soluble fibrin is used as a biomarker for hypercoagulability, thrombotic risk, disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC), and monitoring response to anticoagulant therapy
