Soluble NSF attachment protein receptors (SNAREs) are a family of proteins essential for membrane fusion within cells. They mediate the docking and fusion of vesicles with target membranes during intracellular vesicular transport and exocytosis. SNAREs form a stable complex, the SNARE complex, facilitating membrane fusion. After fusion, the complex is disassembled by NSF, an ATPase, with assistance from SNAPs. Multiple isoforms exist with cell-type specific expression and regulation by phosphorylation.
Facilitates membrane fusion by forming a stable SNARE complex, driving membrane apposition and subsequent fusion. Complex disassembly is ATP-dependent.
