Overview

Solute carrier family 12 member 5 (SLC12A5), also known as KCC2, is a neuron-specific potassium-chloride cotransporter responsible for establishing the chloride ion gradient in neurons. It maintains low intracellular chloride concentrations, critical for synaptic inhibition via GABAergic signaling and cellular protection against excitotoxicity. KCC2 also plays a role in neuroplasticity and is implicated in epilepsy, Rett syndrome, colorectal cancer, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In cancer it can promote tumor growth/metastasis via gene amplification/overexpression.
