It is highly homologous to GLUT3, sharing approximately 95% sequence identity, and is primarily expressed in the testes, suggesting a specialized role in providing energy for spermatogenesis and sperm motility [UniProt, PubMed: 22134353]. Beyond its physiological role in the male reproductive system, SLC2A14 has been identified as a potential oncogene or biomarker in various malignancies, including colorectal and gastric cancers, where its upregulation supports the increased glycolytic demands of tumor cells [PubMed: 30034153].
