Solute carrier family 2 member 11 (SLC2A11; GLUT11) is a facilitative glucose transporter protein encoded by the SLC2A11 gene. It is a member of the extended GLUT family and mediates the transport of sugars like glucose and fructose across cell membranes by facilitative diffusion. SLC2A11 is specifically expressed in heart and skeletal muscle, suggesting a tissue-restricted physiological role. The protein possesses 12 membrane-spanning domains typical of GLUT transporters. Unlike GLUT4, GLUT11’s transport activity is markedly inhibited by fructose. Its closest known paralog is GLUT5 (SLC2A5)[1][3][4]. There is currently no evidence of SLC2A11 being a major therapeutic drug target or being used as a clinical biomarker. Some disease associations are listed in genetic databases, but functional evidence remains limited. Caution is required when reviewing literature, as SLC2A11 has sometimes been erroneously referred to as GLUT10, which appropriately refers to SLC2A10[4].
