Solute carrier family 2 member 14 (SLC2A14)

Target
SLC2A14
Molecular classification
Transporter, Membrane protein, Glucose transporter (GLUT family)
01

Overview

Solute carrier family 2 member 14 (SLC2A14, also known as GLUT14) is an integral membrane protein that mediates facilitated diffusion of glucose and other hexoses like fructose and dehydroascorbate across the plasma membrane. It is a member of the GLUT family of glucose transporters and is highly conserved. Although it shares functional similarity with other glucose transporters (notably SLC2A3/GLUT3), its expression exhibits tissue specificity and its biological and pathological functions are still being elucidated. Diseases associated with SLC2A14 mutations include arterial tortuosity syndrome and neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis. No drugs are currently reported to act as direct and selective modulators of SLC2A14 in clinical use

02

Mechanism of action

Modulation or inhibition of glucose and hexose transport across cell membranes; mechanisms for drugs would involve blocking or altering transporter activity

03

Biological functions

Transmembrane transport of glucoseTransport of other hexoses (e.g., fructose, dehydroascorbate)
04

Disease associations

Arterial tortuosity syndromeNeuronal ceroid lipofuscinosisPotential links to metabolic diseases and neurological disorders have been suggested, but functional disease associations remain limited in the literature.
05

Safety considerations

Broad inhibition of glucose transporters can result in hypoglycemia and cellular metabolic dysfunctionThere are no known SLC2A14-specific safety concerns due to lack of targeted drugs or clinical application thus far.
