Target intelligence / Profile preview
URAT1 (Solute Carrier Family 22 Member 12) is a urate-anion exchanger predominantly expressed in the apical membrane of proximal tubule cells in the kidney. It plays a critical role in regulating blood uric acid levels by mediating the reabsorption of urate from urine back into the bloodstream in exchange for other organic anions. URAT1 is a therapeutic target for hyperuricemia and gout, with several drugs inhibiting its activity to promote renal excretion of uric acid.
