Overview

Solute carrier family 22 member 14 (SLC22A14) is a transmembrane transporter protein, highly expressed in testicular tissue and localized particularly to the mitochondrial membrane of sperm cells. Its principal function is the transport of riboflavin, a vital precursor for energy metabolism via flavoenzymes critical for oxidative phosphorylation and fatty acid β-oxidation in sperm. Deficiency or loss of function of SLC22A14 disrupts sperm motility and flagellar structure, resulting in severe male infertility. The protein is a member of the broader SLC22 organic cation/anion transporter family, sharing structural and functional similarities with other family members. While highly conserved and physiologically important in mammals, it currently lacks approved therapeutic modulators but is of interest for male contraceptive strategies due to its spermatogenesis-specific activity.
