Solute carrier family 22 member 15 (SLC22A15)

Target
SLC22A15
Molecular classification
Transporter, Solute carrier, Organic ion transporter, Zwitterion transporter
01

Overview

Solute carrier family 22 member 15 (SLC22A15) is a membrane transporter protein of the SLC22 family that mediates the transmembrane flux of various medically and physiologically important compounds—including zwitterionic and cationic metabolites, pharmaceuticals, toxins, hormones, and certain drugs. It bidirectionally transports molecules such as ergothioneine, carnitine (and acetylcarnitine), carnosine, betaine, thiamine, gabapentin, and cimetidine. SLC22A15 is most closely related to other zwitterion transporters like SLC22A4 and SLC22A5, but exhibits distinct substrate specificity. Its physiological and pharmacological roles are still being elucidated, with implications in metabolic regulation, drug response variability, and potential links to specific diseases such as carnitine deficiency and certain cancers. The gene encoding this protein is SLC22A15 and is also known by aliases such as FLIPT1 and PRO34686.
