SLC23A3
Molecular classification
Transporter, Solute carrier (SLC) family, Nucleobase-ascorbate transporter (NAT) family
01

Overview

Solute carrier family 23 member 3 (SLC23A3), also known as SVCT3, is a member of the sodium-dependent vitamin C transporter family. While SLC23A1 (SVCT1) and SLC23A2 (SVCT2) are high-affinity, high-capacity ascorbate (vitamin C) transporters critical for vitamin C homeostasis, SLC23A3 is considered an orphan transporter with no reported vitamin C transport activity in humans[1][2][4]. Recent evidence suggests SLC23A3 instead acts as a sodium-dependent hypoxanthine transporter and may possess xanthine-hypoxanthine exchange activity, indicating a role in purine metabolism[7]. The gene is phylogenetically aligned with the nucleobase-ascorbate transporter (NAT) family, but its precise physiologic role in humans remains to be clarified. There are currently no validated disease associations or drugs targeting SLC23A3 directly.
