Solute carrier family 25 member 17 (SLC25A17), commonly referred to as peroxisomal membrane protein PMP34, is a peroxisomal membrane transporter and member of the mitochondrial carrier (solute carrier, SLC) family[2][3][6]. SLC25A17 facilitates the import of essential cofactors—including coenzyme A (CoA), flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD), flavin mononucleotide (FMN), and adenosine monophosphate (AMP)—from the cytosol into the peroxisomal matrix, primarily via a counter-exchange transport mechanism[2][3][6]. This activity is essential to equip peroxisomes for various metabolic processes such as fatty acid β-oxidation and to maintain cellular metabolic homeostasis[2][4][6]. SLC25A17 also plays a role in maintaining the peroxisomal redox balance[2]. Mutations or deficiencies in SLC25A17 are associated with peroxisomal dysfunction, altered lipid composition, and developmental defects in model organisms, and disruptions in its activity may contribute to metabolic and neurodevelopmental disorders[4][3]. Emerging evidence suggests it may have clinical relevance as a biomarker in certain cancers, but no direct therapeutic drugs are known to interact with this target[2][3][1].
