Overview

Solute carrier family 26 member 4 antisense RNA 1 (SLC26A4-AS1) is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) located on the antisense strand of the SLC26A4 gene. It does not encode a protein, but instead regulates the expression of the SLC26A4 gene, which encodes pendrin—a transporter involved in the movement of chloride and bicarbonate ions. Dysregulation of SLC26A4-AS1 has been associated with cancer, especially rectal cancer, where decreased expression acts as a negative regulator of tumor cell proliferation, migration, and invasion via sponging microRNA-3174 (miR-3174)[2]. It has also been linked to Pendred syndrome, congenital hypothyroidism, and kidney stones through its regulatory effects on SLC26A4 gene expression[1]. SLC26A4-AS1 is under investigation as a potential plasma biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of rectal cancer, but it is not currently considered a direct therapeutic target or receptor[2][1].
