Solute carrier family 35 member F4 (SLC35F4) is a protein predicted to be localized to cellular membranes, and classified as a putative solute transporter within the SLC35 family. While most SLC35 members are involved in the transport of nucleotide-conjugated sugars needed for glycoprotein biosynthesis, SLC35F4 remains an “orphan” transporter with its substrate and precise biological role not yet clearly defined. Expression of SLC35F4 has been detected across species (e.g., human, zebrafish) and its gene is associated with some inherited disease phenotypes by genomic studies, but no confirmed molecular mechanisms or direct links to therapeutic intervention have been published. This protein serves as an example of a characterized gene with unknown function among membrane transporters.
