Overview

Solute carrier family 4 member 9 (SLC4A9, also known as AE4) is a transmembrane protein primarily expressed in the kidney, especially in the basolateral membrane of β-intercalated cells. It functions chiefly as a cation-dependent chloride/bicarbonate exchanger, able to utilize sodium or potassium as the driving cation. This protein is involved in the regulation of intracellular and extracellular pH and plays essential roles in renal acid–base homeostasis and salivary gland secretion. Its dysfunction has been associated with renal tubular acidosis and other acid–base disorders. Structurally, SLC4A9 possesses a large intracellular N-terminal domain, multiple transmembrane domains, and displays complex alternative splicing, possibly generating isoforms with distinct transport characteristics[1][4][6][7].
