Choline Transporter-Like Protein 4 (CTL4)

Target
CTL4
Molecular classification
Transporter, Solute Carrier Family
01

Overview

Choline transporter-like protein 4 (CTL4), encoded by the SLC44A4 gene, is a choline transporter involved in both neuronal and non-neuronal acetylcholine synthesis. In the olivocochlear bundle, it supports hair cell function and protects against acoustic injury. Outside the nervous system, CTL4 mediates acetylcholine synthesis and secretion in tissues like lung and colon cancer cells, offering a potential target for modulating cholinergic signaling without affecting neuronal pathways. Its role in non-neuronal acetylcholine production is particularly relevant for cancer research and potential therapeutic interventions in immune and degenerative diseases.
