Solute carrier family 45 member 1 (SLC45A1) is a membrane transporter protein and part of the major facilitator superfamily, predominantly expressed in the developing and adult brain[1][2][3]. It functions as a proton-coupled symporter for glucose and galactose, playing a critical role in glucose uptake into neural cells, especially under acidic conditions[1][3]. SLC45A1 is essential for normal brain energy metabolism; mutations in this gene cause reduced transporter activity leading to moderate to severe intellectual disability, epilepsy, and neuropsychiatric features, making SLC45A1 an important factor in neurodevelopmental diseases[1][2]. There are currently no approved drugs known to interact directly with this transporter, and it is not established as a biomarker or therapeutic target outside specific genetic disorders.
