Target intelligence / Profile preview
SLC6A16 (Solute carrier family 6 member 16) is a membrane transporter protein belonging to the SLC6 family, also known as the neurotransmitter:sodium symporter (NSS) family or Na^+/Cl^--dependent transporter family[2][3][5]. These transporters use a sodium gradient to reuptake neurotransmitters, amino acids, or osmolytes into cells[2][5]. SLC6A16 is characterized by 12 transmembrane domains and is related to the neurotransmitter transporter group, though its specific substrates are incompletely defined. It is primarily expressed in the brain, pancreas, testis, and prostate[2][3]. SLC6A16 has been implicated in neurological disorders such as spastic tetraplegia and progressive microcephaly, as well as brain glioblastoma multiforme[3]. While well-classified as a transporter and a plausible CNS drug target, no approved drugs are currently known to specifically target SLC6A16, and its mechanism in disease or as a biomarker is not deeply established[3][5].
