Solute carrier family 8 member A1 antisense RNA 1 (SLC8A1-AS1)

Target
SLC8A1-AS1
Molecular classification
Long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), Antisense RNA
01

Overview

SLC8A1 antisense RNA 1 (SLC8A1-AS1) is a long non-coding antisense RNA transcribed from the antisense strand of the *SLC8A1* gene region. It functions primarily in the regulation of gene expression and has diverse roles in different tissues, including the heart and multiple types of cancer. In acute myocardial infarction, SLC8A1-AS1 is downregulated, which leads to the activation of protective pathways such as cGMP-PKG and mitigation of myocardial injury by antagonizing pro-inflammatory signaling and reducing infarct size. In oncology, differential expression of SLC8A1-AS1 has been linked to disease prognosis and patient stratification, with particular relevance in cervical squamous cell carcinoma, glioma, thyroid carcinoma, and oral squamous cell carcinoma seen in risk predictive modeling and biomarker studies. SLC8A1-AS1 exerts its regulatory effects through involvement in competing endogenous RNA networks, affecting the expression and activity of protein-coding genes such as SLC8A1. SLC8A1-AS1 is not considered a direct therapeutic target for drugs, but its expression is of interest as a potential prognostic biomarker.

Mechanism of action

Not applicable (SLC8A1-AS1 is not a direct drug target)

03

Biological functions

Regulation of gene expression, especially at transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels (as a signal, decoy, guide, or scaffold molecule)Modulation of SLC8A1 (a sodium/calcium exchanger) expression and activityParticipation in the cGMP-PKG signaling pathway and reduction of pro-inflammatory factor release
04

Disease associations

Cardiovascular disease (protective role in acute myocardial infarction, limits myocardial injury)Cancer (expression profiles associated with risk and prognosis in glioma, thyroid carcinoma, oral squamous cell carcinoma, cervical squamous cell carcinoma)
05

Safety considerations

No specific safety concerns or therapeutic challenges noted, as SLC8A1-AS1 itself is not a direct drug target
06

Biomarkers

SLC8A1-AS1 expression levels have been proposed as biomarkers for risk stratification and prognosis in cervical squamous cell carcinoma and other cancers
