Overview

Solute carrier organic anion transporter family member 2A1 (SLCO2A1), commonly known as the prostaglandin transporter (PGT), is a 12-membrane-spanning protein primarily responsible for the transport and cellular uptake of prostaglandins and certain thromboxanes across mammalian cell membranes. It plays essential roles in regulating prostaglandin concentrations within various tissues, thereby modulating many physiological processes including vascular tone, inflammation, gastric protection, renal function, reproductive events, and fever response. SLCO2A1 dysfunction or mutations are implicated in several rare diseases, especially primary hypertrophic osteoarthropathy and chronic enteropathies. The transporter acts as both importer and exporter in a tissue-dependent context, mediating clearance of prostaglandins and facilitating their movement between tissue compartments.
