Overview

SLCO6A1 is a member of the organic anion transporting polypeptides (OATPs), part of the solute carrier (SLC) superfamily, specifically the SLCO subfamily. It is predicted to function as a sodium-independent organic anion transporter and is primarily expressed in the testis, spleen, brain, and placenta. As a cancer/testis antigen designated CT48, it is selectively expressed in normal testis and in a variety of tumors, implicating a possible role in cancer biology or germ cell transporter functions. Unlike the major OATP members, SLCO6A1’s endogenous substrates, pharmacological interactions, and physiological roles are poorly characterized. The protein is predicted to have 12 transmembrane domains and is located in the plasma membrane, but very limited experimental evidence is available regarding its substrate specificity or clinical relevance as a drug transporter.
