It is not a specific molecule, receptor, or enzyme, but rather a clinical finding identified through a physical examination using the TART mnemonic: Tissue texture changes, Asymmetry, Restriction of motion, and Tenderness (American Osteopathic Association). From a biological perspective, it involves altered neurophysiological signaling and local biomechanical stress, which can lead to localized inflammation or pain (Glossary of Osteopathic Terminology). Management of somatic dysfunction typically involves Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT), which uses manual techniques to restore normal range of motion and alleviate symptoms. Because it represents a structural and functional state of the musculoskeletal system rather than a discrete biological pathway or protein, there are no pharmacological agents that bind to it as a molecular target. Consequently, it is incorrectly classified if presented as a therapeutic target for drug discovery, as it remains a clinical condition addressed through physical intervention.
