Somatostatin receptor 5 (SSTR5) is a G protein-coupled receptor that mediates the inhibitory effects of somatostatin on hormone secretion in various tissues. It is highly expressed in the pituitary gland, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract and plays a key role in regulating the release of growth hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, prolactin, insulin, and glucagon. It is a therapeutic target for neuroendocrine tumors and pituitary disorders.
Upon ligand binding, SSTR5 activates Gi/o proteins, leading to inhibition of adenylyl cyclase, decreased cAMP levels, and suppression of hormone secretion.
