Somatostatin Secretion by Delta Cells (SST Secretion (Delta Cells))

Target
SST Secretion (Delta Cells)
Molecular classification
Endocrine Process, Cellular Secretion
01

Overview

Somatostatin secretion by delta (δ) cells refers to the release of the peptide hormone somatostatin from specialized endocrine cells found primarily in the pancreatic islets, but also present in the stomach and intestine. Delta cells make up approximately 4–5% of pancreatic islet cells. The secretion process is stimulated by elevated glucose levels, involving closure of ATP-sensitive potassium channels, leading to membrane depolarization, increased intracellular calcium, and Ca(2+)-dependent exocytosis of somatostatin-containing granules. Somatostatin acts locally within the islet as a paracrine inhibitor of insulin and glucagon secretion, and also inhibits its own release (autocrine effect). Dysregulation of somatostatin secretion is implicated in diabetes mellitus and impaired hypoglycemia-induced glucagon response.
